What is Dental Autotransplantation?
Every good specialist in the field of dental implantology still on the first consultation will tell you about methods dealing with the solution to the problem of insufficient bone volume. It is a very common problem and there are many solutions of it. We should know them. For the dental implant procedure with insufficient bone tissue, it is necessary to perform bone augmentation or bone replacement surgery, i.e. osteoplasty. Various techniques are developed for this kind of surgical interventions and your doctor will introduce them to you if it is necessary. Since bone augmentation or osteoplasty has such protocols depending on the clinical situation.
1. Sinus-lifting – is performed to increase the bone volume of the upper jaw by raising the floor of the nasal sinuses.
2. Autografting – grafting of bone blocks taken from the patient.
3. The use of barrier membranes.
Autotransplantation, despite the additional injury for the patient and the active production of new synthetic bone material, is actively used, as a kind of osteoplasty, and has its advantages. For instance, an autograft, the patient’s own bone tissue, is survived faster and does not cause failure. There is clinical experience that shows that the implants integrated into the bone grafts, are not worse according their service life than those which are placed in natural not surgically operated bone.
Autotransplantation is a surgery performed in the operating room that should have advanced equipment and proper conditions of asepsis and antisepsis. Local anesthesia is usually used in this case but general anesthesia is required when there is a large amount of surgery. This surgery is performed in two stages.
The first stage is bone (block) harvesting from the chin, the pelvic bone or other bones in the body of the patient for further transplantation into the jawbone, where implant will be placed. Soft gingival tissue at the site of transplantation exfoliates and the block is fixed to the jaw bone by fasteners made of biocompatible material – titanium. Any discrepancies between the surfaces of the bone block and the jaw bone, cavities and roughness are filled with bone crumbs, limited by a barrier membrane, and finally closed with sutures on the soft tissues. After the surgery the patient stays under medical supervision for several hours.
Pain appears after the termination of painkillers, but the obligatory prescription of medicine in the postoperative period relieves discomfort. The second stage after healing of sutures and survival of bone graft, is the implant placement. The barrier membranes, if they are absorbable, do not need to be removed.
All of this is an effective and successful technique of osteoplasty, although it looks quite time-consuming, it is performed quickly and skillfully in a well-equipped operating room by qualified specialists.
The company Bio3 Implants recommends to give up smoking and physical activities, to follow all doctor’s recommendations about diet and lifestyle in the postoperative period for the prevention of inflammatory processes after dental autotransplantation.
